Whats new with Ben – July

Kate Winslet the St Bernard

Hey all, I thought I would take a post just to give you an update on the life of Ben.

Blog

Well, the blog is churning along and I am loving all this writing! I am continuing to make content and just started my mojito series. I really enjoy doing the research on the history posts and the history of rum is really interesting. After looking at gin, the Manhattan, and now Mojitos and rum, I am learning what a rich history and length our libations have. Sometimes the history is really neat and fun, but sometimes really ugly. For example, rum’s history is pretty closely tied to slavery. Stay tuned for an upcoming post where I will share more information.

If any of you have a suggestion on a food or cocktail you would like me to do a deep dive on, let me know! I am looking for my next thing right now.

Photography is not my strong suit, but I think I am making improvements and getting there.

Additionally, I am diving deeper into Google Analytics and Google Adwords. I have always thought I had a pretty good grasp of these tools, as I have had a website for years and the numbers behind them always interest me, but now I am solidifying these skill sets. Not only so I can track goals and specifics for this website, but also so I can improve what I can provide to my consultancy clients.

Kate Winslet

Boy, she is growing! She has doubled in size since we got her and her sweet lil personality is really coming out. Along with the sweetness, is a bit more puppy stuff. 3 am barking sessions….. UGGHH! She is barking because she is in her kennel AND she can’t see us. While she is mastering the potty training, she is in her kennel because we can’t trust her without constant supervision yet. We can’t have her in the same room in a kennel because she is REALLY loud and bangs around. We are doing our best to work through this, but boy… I need as much beauty sleep as I can get and just haven’t been getting it.

It has been a few years since we had a dog and I kind of forgot the constant attention they need. Once again, good thing she is so adorbs.

CSA

Well, my crack is in season RIGHT NOW. Shell peas. Fresh shell peas are about the best thing in the world. We did get some in our CSA, but I bought some more. They are spendy little suckers (about $4/lb), but I just can’t help myself. They certainly don’t last long.
We have gotten some purple beans, some beautiful golden and red potatoes, and more. One of my less favorites is kale, but I made a ground turkey and kale soup that was pretty dang good. It was a Pinterest find.

Prairie Roots Co-op

Recently, a local co-op named Prairie Roots has opened up and we became members early on in the fundraising process. I think the judgement is out on whether it is a place where I will do a whole bunch of shopping, but there are certainly things I really like.

As you know, we are making Mojitos right now, so I have been going through my fair share of mint. The co-op has some really beautiful herbs. Sure, mint is in season right now and if a person has an established plant, it grows like wildfire, but the mint I get at my normal grocery store is just crap compared to what I found at Prairie Roots AND cheaper.

Bees

They are still doing good and expanding. We just added supers (some of the boxes that bees make honey in) to the top. For the first time, I shoved my bare finger into one of the frames and tasted honey straight from the comb. As a pro tip, don’t forget that your head gear is on before you get your finger all sticky with honey.

Finally, thanks for taking the time to read some of my blog!
