Clown Shoes Mango Kolsch Beer and my belly.

Clown shoes mango kolsch beer

Has it been fun following the Mojito series? I love doing these deep dives, but it doesn’t mean that I don’t eat and drink other stuff! If you know me, I also love beer. I brew beer and have a two tap keezer. Today’s post, however, is not about brewing beer. It is about other people’s beer in my belly. We have a brewery that just started distributing in my area, Clown Shoes brewing, and I picked up a sixer of their Mango Kolsch beer.

Mango Kolsch Beer Experience

I have not been a fan of fruity beers in the past, but have been more and more open to them as I have been digging deeper into sour styles of beer. For this one, I stopped by my local Bottle Barn to pick up some bourbon they had on sale and asked them what is new and awesome. Chris sent me in the direction of this Clown Shoes pick. I indicated I wanted a lighter summer beer… something to help stave off the heat. The Mango Kolsch is what I walked out the door with.

I am not disappointed in the pick. It is a lighter beer (both in mouthfeel and ABV) with the kind of summer freshness that I was looking for. There was only the subtleness of mango in the taste. This is a very drinkable beer, IMO. I won’t pick this up every time, but going on the list of things I will drink.

The Specifics of this Kolsch Beer

Ratebeer gives it 73, but 91 against those of the same style. Note that it isn’t rated against the Kolsch style, but against “fruit beer.” This is because, technically, it is not a Kolsch beer, as it does not follow Reinheitsgebot (super old laws in Europe that dictate style). My can says it is 5.5 ABV and it has a really low hops flavor (25 IBU).

Kolsch tidbits

  • I’m spelling it wrong. It is Kölsch… with the little dots. I don’t have a key on my keyboard with the dots.
  • True Kolsch has a location designation and follows very specific brewing guidelines. Kolsch must be brewed in Cologne, Germany.
  • According to Wikipedia, there are only 13 breweries that brew kolsch style beer, but I would imagine this is increasing with the popularity of craft beer.
  • Kolsch style beers are great for when you are painting a deck, but probably not a Mona Lisa.

So, that is what is in my fridge this week and if you are in the mood for a nice, light, beer…. Pick up a six pack of Clown Shoes Mango Kolsch.

I am always a little hesitant to try beer where the packaging and/or name looks/feels gimmicky or outrageous… I my first thought is “oh, that is their schtick. Must be to make up for beer quality.” This, however, is pretty darn good.
