Life in delta – lots is changing

Wow, it has been a crazy two months. This is not my typical post about food and beverage, but I also need a place to document a little bit of the chaos that is happening in my world…. What better place to do it than on Ramshackle Pantry?

Things that have happened to me in the past two months

Quit my day job

yup. I left my 9 to 5. I was a software engineer at a great company, but felt that I needed to strike out on my own! So, I am working to engage in contract front end web development. Who knows what the next year holds, but I hope to gain some development business and continue my lifelong pursuit of learning. Development is my trade and craft. I no longer have someone guiding that craft and I am excited to push myself.

Additionally, my wife and myself both work from home now. So far, that is going very well and we haven’t killed each other, yet. 🙂 I feel super fortunate that Ashley is supportive of my endeavors.

Started Ramshackle Pantry

I started this website! I had been planning it for a while, but actually got the ball rolling on posts. My hopes for this blog are to improve my writing craft, learn about food, share my knowledge, and develop a food related brand. Additionally, by necessity, I need to improve my photography skills. Cooking blogs need beautiful photos and I need to better learn how to do that. Outside of the blog, I previously published a cookbook (Fifty Shades of Bacon) and am developing a new parody recipe book. We self published the first book, but am trying to go a bit more legit with this one and looking for a literary agent. That has been a slow and challenging prBen with his first hiveocess, but I have hope that someone will like what I am doing.

I started beekeeping

I have a friend I talk food with and we got on the subject of honey bees. Before you know it, BLAMMO, we have a few beehives. This is a complete learning process and while I may not know exactly what I am doing, I do know that beehives survived without humans for a very long time. The goal is to not help kill them. And hopefully harvest some honey so I can make some mead!

Welcomed Kate Winslet to the family

No, the Titanic star is not staying with us. We have a new little (not little for long) St. Bernard puppy. So far, she is quite a bit of work and still getting up with her at night. Dealing with all the puppy things, but she is so darn cute. Not having a job is sort of perfect timing for this, just because of the amount of attention she needs. And not that I don’t have a list of 5 million things I need to be doing, but it just means that I have to slow them down to make time/room for our new little family member. I suspect that the work I do with her now will pay dividends in the years to come.

That is a little glimpse into the going ons and chaos of my life right now. While none of this is easy, it is all great. We have one life to live and I intend on doing some living!

Hi Ben – what an exciting time of life – congrats on striking out on your own, cookbook publication(s), Kate Winslet and BEES!!! We are also in a time of major transition at our house – 4 boys finishing up the school year – closing on our house next week – heading to Romania for ten days – then closing on our new house at the end of June. So much more to the story, BUT so little time 🙂 – life is good and I loved learning about yours!

Congratulations on leaving your 9-5 job to pursue your passions! I stumbled across your blog while wandering through Reddit and, despite being new to it, your blog is great! I can’t wait to learn more about the wonders of enchiladas and beyond. 🙂
