Things I’m diggin this week

Hey there ladies and gents! I just wanted to share some of the things that have happening in my life this week and list out what I have been into (or not into) recently. This almost has nothing to do with our deep dive series (which is macaroni and cheese), only sometimes is about cooking at all, and mostly is shenanigans. Without further ado, here is the list:

Pumpkins and Squashes

Along with fall comes a new season with familiar Fall flavor. Not only are we getting some beautiful squashes and pumpkins in our CSA, my wife is getting some volunteer (they just started growing) butternut squash in her compost pile. They MUST have been from last year, as I don’t think I have bought any for quite some time.

I have done a few simple dinners with just roasted squash with butter and brown sugar. We also made some buttercup squash raviolis in a creamy sage and squash sauce that was pretty dang good. I feel a few soups and the like coming on.

Fresh Pasta

In preparation for the macaroni and cheese series, I decided I was going to double down on my pasta making this week. I don’t really have any appropriate equipment, but I do have a rolling pin and a pizza cutter… so I have made due!

I have definitely made pasta before, but the current deep dive is certainly teaching me things about pasta that I never knew. Maybe I would tell you what it was, but you are going to have to wait for the other posts! I am learning quite a bit and this is a bit more complicated than I had originally thought.

Gentle Leader dog leads

Oh, my sweet puppers, Kate Winslet. She really is a great girl and now six months old. While she is pretty darn good on walks, she does get very excited when she sees people. So excited that she pulls the leash. Now that she is nearly 100lbs, that pull weight is starting to get ridiculous. I can handle her, but it would be nice if Ashley could maybe bring her for a walk, as well.

In comes the Gentle Leader. It does take a bit of training and Kate is not a huge fan of it, but the amount of pulling while she is on it is minimal. She does belly flop around on to her back like the world is about to end when she gets frustrated with it, but hopefully that phase will end.

Also, did I mention how unaware she is of her slobber?

Star Wars

Tickets for the new Star Wars movie went on sale this week. No, I did not get them, but I will see the show. I grew up with Star Wars and loved the series. As an adult, I read several of the books and own the entire series.

I am probably not the superest of fans, but anything Star Wars related definitely hits me right in the nostalgia feels. As a side note, I would rather live in a Star Trek universe, but the Star Wars universe is way cooler to watch. Even though I like Star Trek, I love Star Wars.

So, that is about it. I have been busy cooking, researching mac and cheese, working on some code projects, and a few other personal things. Been a good week! Here, have some more Star Wars:

Looking forward to your mac and cheese series, Ben. And do say hello to Kate for me—and my black Lab Jake. She looks like 100 lbs of sweetness.
